Is There an Open Enrollment Period for Dental Insurance?

No! You can buy dental or vision insurance year round.

However, there may be certain dental or vision plans that you can only buy during open enrollment, especially if you are adding or bundling them with your health plan. We don’t generally recommend getting the dental or vision plans that come with your health plans, as they generally offer less benefits and limited networks than companies that offer dental and vision plans separately.

How Do I Add Dental Coverage to my Plan?

You can buy a dental plan that is packaged with your health insurance during open enrollment or a special enrollment period, or you can purchase a stand-alone plan at any time through Independent Health Agents.

Why Do Some Dental Insurance Plans Have Waiting Periods?

Insurance is meant to be purchased before you need it – not after something major happens. Many insurance companies have waiting periods to make sure people don’t sign up for dental insurance just to get a quick discount on major services, only to cancel the policy once the problem has been taken care of.

Fortunately, there are plenty of affordable dental insurance options out there that don’t involve any waiting periods.

Is Preventative Care Covered on Dental Plans?

On lots of plans, yes! But not all of them. Make sure to check out your benefits for your existing plan to see what is and what isn’t covered.

What are the Costs of Common Dental Procedures With Insurance?

The price of dental procedures can vary for reasons such as where you live and if you have access to dentists in your plan’s network.

To help you get a better understanding, here are some estimates and tips about dental costs.

Is Oral Surgery Covered by Medical or Dental Insurance?

Medical insurance will cover some types of oral surgeries, but not all of them. In most cases, the two plans will overlap one another, picking up various aspects of the line-item expenses and expecting the other policy to pay for the ones that are not covered. Learn more>>

Can I Cancel My Dental Plan Anytime?

Generally you can cancel a stand-alone dental plan by not paying.

If you have a health insurance plan that includes dental, you can switch it during open enrollment, but can’t drop the dental part of the plan without dropping the whole plan.

I Don't Have Children, Am I Required to Purchase a Child Dental Plan?

If you shop off-exchange, pediatric dental is required. If you purchase an off-exchange plan, the carrier must be “reasonably assured” that you have exchange-certified pediatric dental coverage in place in order to sell you a policy without pediatric dental.
