How to Search the Ambetter Network Correctly
Most people who think their doctor is out of network have simply searched the wrong plan. Three things to get right:
- Pick the correct plan year. The tool defaults to the current year. If you are shopping for coverage that starts January 1, switch the year before you search. Networks change every January.
- Illinois has one network: PREMIER. Unlike some states, Ambetter of Illinois runs a single provider network across every metal tier for 2026, so a Bronze plan and a Gold plan use the same doctors and hospitals. When the tool asks you to choose a plan, PREMIER is the only option.
- Search the doctor, not just the hospital. A hospital being in network does not mean every physician who practices there is. Anesthesiologists, radiologists and pathologists are contracted separately. Confirm the individual provider.

Added to the Ambetter network in November 2024. Advocate is the largest health system in Illinois. Its hospitals include Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Advocate Lutheran General in Park Ridge, Advocate Good Samaritan in Downers Grove, Advocate Condell in Libertyville, Advocate Sherman in Elgin, and Advocate Children’s Hospital.
RUSH University System for Health
4 hospitals · 140 locations · 2,300+ providers
Added in December 2023. Includes RUSH University Medical Center, RUSH Copley Medical Center, RUSH Oak Park Hospital and Riverside Medical Center. RUSH offers same day appointments and virtual visits, and has more than 500 Spanish speaking providers across the Chicago area.

If Your Doctor Is Not in the Ambetter Network
You have more options than most people realize. In rough order of how often they work:
- Check a different Ambetter plan. Participation can vary between Ambetter plan designs. The same doctor may be in network on one and not another.
- Compare a different carrier. This is where an independent agent earns their keep. We can check the same doctor across Ambetter, Blue Cross, Cigna, Molina, Oscar and UnitedHealthcare in one pass instead of you running six separate searches.
- Ask whether the practice is joining. Contracts are negotiated continuously. A practice listed as out of network today may be pending.
- Request continuity of care. If you are in active treatment for a serious condition, pregnant, or recently had surgery, you may be able to keep seeing your current provider at in network cost sharing for a transition period. Ask Ambetter member services about a continuity of care request.

Is Advocate Health Care in the Ambetter network?
Yes. Advocate joined the Ambetter of Illinois network in November 2024, giving members access to all 11 Advocate hospitals in Illinois and roughly 300 sites of care. Confirm your specific location in the provider search, since participation can vary by plan.
Is RUSH in the Ambetter network?
Yes. RUSH University System for Health joined in December 2023. That covers RUSH University Medical Center, RUSH Copley, RUSH Oak Park Hospital and Riverside Medical Center, plus about 140 RUSH locations across the Chicago area.
Does Ambetter require a referral to see a specialist?
No. The Premier network does not require referrals, so you can book a specialist directly without going through a primary care physician first. Since Premier is the only Ambetter network sold in Illinois, this applies to every Ambetter Bronze, Silver and Gold plan in the state.
Does Ambetter cover care outside Illinois?
More than most marketplace plans. Emergency and urgent care are covered anywhere. Beyond that, the Premier network carries reciprocity across every state where Ambetter sells a Premier network plan, so you can use in-network providers in those states rather than being limited to Illinois. That is unusual for an ACA plan and it matters if you travel often, have a child at college out of state, or split the year between two homes. Tell us your situation before you enroll and we will confirm what applies.
How often does the Ambetter provider network change?
Contracts are added and dropped throughout the year, and the largest changes take effect each January 1. That is why we recommend re checking your providers during open enrollment rather than assuming last year’s network still applies.
Can I still enroll in Ambetter right now?
Open enrollment for 2027 coverage through Get Covered Illinois begins November 1, 2026. Outside that window you can enroll only with a qualifying life event such as losing job based coverage, moving, marriage, or having a baby, which opens a special enrollment period. If something has changed for you recently, call us and we will tell you whether you qualify.
