LifeSecure Critical Illness Insurance

A Lump-Sum Cash Payment When You’re Diagnosed With a Serious Illness

Choose a benefit amount from $5,000 to $50,000. If you’re diagnosed with a covered condition, LifeSecure pays you the full amount in cash—use it for whatever you need, from medical bills to mortgage payments.

How LifeSecure Critical Illness Works

Simple, lump-sum protection that helps your finances survive a major diagnosis.

When you choose your coverage, you pick a benefit amount—anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000. If you’re later diagnosed with a covered condition, LifeSecure pays you the entire benefit amount as a lump sum.

There are no restrictions on how you use the money. Many policyholders use it to cover deductibles, out-of-network specialists, experimental treatments, lost income while recovering, household bills, mortgage payments, or travel for treatment.

Even better: each dependent child on your policy is automatically covered with a $2,500 benefit at no additional cost.

Why this matters:

  • Average out-of-pocket cost for cancer treatment: $5,000–$12,000+ even with insurance
  • Average heart attack patient misses 6–8 weeks of work
  • 1 in 4 cancer survivors experience financial hardship
  • A lump-sum cash benefit hits your bank account when bills hit the mailbox

Common Covered Conditions

LifeSecure’s critical illness plan covers the most common life-threatening diagnoses. Examples include:

  • Cancer (invasive cancer)
  • Heart attack (myocardial infarction)
  • Stroke

  • Major organ transplant (heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas)
  • End-stage renal (kidney) failure
  • Paralysis (loss of use of two or more limbs)

  • Loss of sight, hearing, or speech
  • Carcinoma in situ (typically a partial benefit)
  • Childhood-specific conditions covered under dependent benefit
Covered Condition % of Benefit Amount Paid (First Diagnosis)

Major Organ Failure 100%

Benefit Amount Options

Pick the lump-sum amount that fits your needs and budget.

Benefit Amount What It Covers Typical Monthly Cost (age 45 non-smoker)
$5,000 Health plan deductible + a few months of out-of-pocket costs From about $12–$18
$10,000 Most likely out-of-pocket maximum + initial recovery costs From about $22–$32
$15,000 (most common) Out-of-pocket maximum + initial recovery costs $27.00/month (verified IL rate, age 35 Self-only)
$50,000 Comprehensive financial cushion through recovery From about $85–$130

Premiums shown are illustrative ranges. Actual rates depend on age at enrollment, tobacco use, gender, state, and coverage selections. Children’s $2,500 benefit is included automatically for dependents.

Why People Add Critical Illness Coverage

  • Family history of cancer, heart disease, or stroke. If you have a parent or sibling who’s been diagnosed, your statistical risk is meaningfully higher.
  • You have a high-deductible health plan. Your major medical pays the medical bills, but you’re still on the hook for the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum.
  • Limited emergency savings. A lump-sum benefit is essentially an emergency fund that activates the moment you’re diagnosed.
  • Self-employed or commission-based income. No paid sick leave, no short-term disability through an employer—the benefit can replace lost income.
  • Single-income household. If you’re the primary earner and you get sick, the family budget feels it immediately.

Extra Benefits Included at No Cost

Return of Premium Benefit: If you die while your policy is in force, 100% of all premiums paid (less any benefits paid out) are returned to your beneficiary or estate.
Health Screening Benefit: $50/year per covered person for one of 30+ wellness procedures (mammogram, colonoscopy, stress test, PSA, blood panel, etc.). Not available in MI or MN.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is “diagnosis” defined for a claim?

A claim requires a formal diagnosis from a licensed physician—typically including pathology reports for cancer, ECG/biomarker evidence for heart attack, neurological imaging for stroke, etc. The exact diagnostic criteria for each condition are spelled out in the policy.

Can I receive the benefit more than once?

LifeSecure’s critical illness plans typically allow benefits for the recurrence of the same condition (after a separation period) and for subsequent diagnosis of a different covered condition. Specific terms and re-occurrence rules are in the policy documents.

Is there a waiting period?

Yes. There is a 30-day wait for heart attack, stroke, end-stage renal failure, and major organ failure. There is a 90-day wait for invasive cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, and carcinoma in situ (30 days in GA/ID/NC/NH/OK/TN; 60 days in AL). If diagnosed during the wait period you may cancel for a full refund.

Are pre-existing conditions excluded?

Yes. Conditions you’ve been diagnosed with or treated for before your policy effective date are typically not covered. There’s usually a look-back period (commonly 12 months) and a corresponding exclusion period after coverage starts.

Do my children need to be added separately?

No. Each dependent child is automatically covered for $2,500 at no additional charge. You don’t need to upgrade to a family tier to get child coverage.

What ages can apply?

Most LifeSecure critical illness plans accept applicants from age 18 to 70. Premiums are based on your age at enrollment.
